The Eye of the Storm: Chapter 5 - Cold

by Saturday, February 23, 2019

Admin note: We're back! Thanks for your patience - we were having some technical issues with the blog and I've also been having some personal real life stuff. I mentioned this on Twitter but in case you missed it: I'm going to be taking a break from subs for a while (unless something new comes out like the HTTYD3 stuff). Will continue to translate interviews and update on the Twitter account! Appreciate your understanding! (Subs on older videos will be back! Just need some time.)

This is a shorter chapter but does a good job of showing both Haoran's playful and more introspective side! Three more to go~

Chapter Five - Cold

Different circles means different personas.
Different winds means you're being pulled in different directions. Have you found your direction?

The Eye of the Storm: Chapter 4 - Scene

by Saturday, January 12, 2019

This chapter takes us out of the chronological account of Haoran's life that we've had thus far and focuses on some other topics, like friendships and first loves. He talks about his trip in Japan and feeling inspired by Kiko Mizuhara, about Give Me Five and the friends that he met through the variety show, and about an absolutely fantastic instance with the paparazzi.

Chapter Four - Scene

Friends are the warm breeze that we have by our side. We'll discover the effect that we can have on others, and can also find traces of their influence in ourselves. Love and like is an important part of that. What kind of person you are decides what kind of person you will meet.

The Eye of the Storm: Chapter 3 - Tomb Sweeping Day

by Wednesday, December 05, 2018

In Chapter 3 of Liu Hao Ran's first book The Eye of the Storm, he talks about the moment when the wind in his life became a powerful storm - becoming an actor and embarking on a journey that he had never even thought about before, including filming a variety show, a movie, etc. - basically, he describes, through his eyes, what 2015 was like.

To give some additional context, after Liu Hao Ran debuted in Beijing Love Story, which premiered on Valentine's Day 2014, he vanished. C-netizens who watched the film then said that they thought at the time that the child who played the memorable Song Ge was a one-hit wonder, as he would disappear from the entertainment world for about a year. (Haoran was nominated for Best New Actor at the Beijing College Student Film Festival for the performance.)

You can find Chen Sicheng's casting call for Beijing Love Story from 2013 still on his Weibo - he was scouring the various performing arts schools in Bejing to find his two young leads (Ouyang Nana ended up being casted by recommendation from a friend). Important thing to note - in 2013, Chen Sicheng had already completed the script for Detective Chinatown, but film studios wanted him to prove himself first with a "safer" film. To put it another way, when Chen Sicheng was casting for the role of Song Ge, he also had Qin Feng in the back of his mind. Song Ge was essentially an extended audition for Liu Hao Ran, and it's believed that when Haoran went back to school in 2014, he had already verbally agreed to star in Detective Chinatown next to A-lister Wang Bao Qiang.

Reading this chapter, you might think, "Did he really need to go through all that effort in preparing for the gaokao? Did he really need to go to drama college considering he had already debuted?" We recently touched on this subject in a response on our CC, but I also wanted to add the decision to attend drama school was also due to two additional reasons: 1) Haoran himself was determined to finish high school on a strong note - he talks a little about his personality here, but basically there wasn't a scenario where he wasn't going to college. 2) His bosses, Chen Si Cheng and Tong Li Ya, were huge advocates of him going to school - specifically CAD, as they are both alumni. Chen Si Cheng personally helped Haoran prepare for the yikao portion of his exams.

Interview: One Year Anniversary of The Eye of the Storm

by Friday, November 16, 2018

In celebration of the one year anniversary of his first book, The Eye of the Storm (which we are currently in the process of translating), Liu Hao Ran held a book signing event at the Page One bookstore in Beijing yesterday.

Apart from being in great spirits and joking around with fans, there was also a brief Q&A session before the signing started. Translation can be found below (keep in mind that he was answering questions in a half joking manner - he was in a really good mood), with more pics from the event! Shoutout to the Cfan who did the transcript

The Eye of the Storm: Chapter Two - Dandelion

by Wednesday, November 14, 2018

Welcome to Chapter 2 of The Eye of the Storm, which is Liu Hao Ran's book that was published in November 2017 in commemoration of his 20th birthday! Chapter 2 focuses on the turning point of Liu Hao Ran's life - when he left his hometown of Pingdingshan, Henan Province to Beijing at the age of 12 to attend the Beijing Dance Academy.

To give you some background to understand why Liu Hao Ran's family decided to let him go to boarding school at such a young age, here's some information on the school itself.

The Eye of the Storm: Chapter One - Thawing

by Sunday, October 28, 2018

The long awaited Chapter 1 from Liu Hao Ran's book The Eye of the Storm is here! The chapters are lengthy and have a lot of content to them which meant I needed to be able to devote a huge chunk of time to them, and we just haven't had much time on our hands lately (the ever-present dilemma when we do find a bit of time - sub a vid or translate for a post? Sooo behind on subs though). We'll be translating the rest as well. I have a bet with myself on whether I can finish translating the book before he starts his next project - my money's on him.

The Eye of the Storm: Preface

by Tuesday, May 22, 2018

Image result for 刘昊然 书
见风 (the official English title is the Eye of the Storm but a more literal translation would be See the Wind) is the first book published by Liu Hao Ran and was released in November 2017. In the book, Liu Hao Ran shares his thoughts on his journey thus far, both as a young actor and as a young adult – the book is split into eight chapters, and he uses wind as the common theme to describe his outlook on life and his career. I’m not sure if I’ll be translating the entire book yet, but I wanted to share the preface as I thought it would be a good beginning for this blog – if it reads a bit choppy at times, rest assured that’s all on the translator (me).
